Test Evolution Ltd’s primary activity is the design, manufacture and installation of custom test equipment, monitoring and design solutions for a multitude of differing industries.  Over the years this has ranged from pcb level designs through to large multi-cabinet systems.  Our equipment has been installed and used across Europe, North America and the Far East.

In recent years we have seen more emphasis on the development of production test systems, such as burn in / life test and end of line test equipment, primarily for the optoelectronics industry.  Some of these systems consist of ‘off the shelf’ instrumentation, typically integrated into a cabinet and driven by software written for the application.  Other systems have been developed from the bottom up and consist almost entirely of electronics, software and mechanics designed specifically for their purpose.  The design approach taken has depends on several factors such as size, performance, cost, delivery timescale and also customer preference.  The approach used is discussed in detail with the customer prior to quotation and is accompanied with a preliminary specification if necessary.  Often there is a perception that using ‘off the shelf’ instrumentation is the safer route, possibly from a timescale, cost or reliability route.  We have found that we can often develop ‘custom’ systems which cost less, take less space and perform better than an instrumentation equivalent, because the equipment is specifically designed for its purpose.  As for reliability we still have systems in use which were installed over 10 years ago and have been in constant use ever since.

Developed for a manufacturer of commercial washing machine control electronics this system was required to provide a production burn in / soak test of their electronic modules.  The test system comprised an industrial oven in which the modules were placed at an elevated temperature, a control unit containing relay control and distributed I/O modules and a rugged, safety interlocked metal cage containing 12 washing machine motors to provide an operational load to the modules under test.

 

The system cycled the modules round a simulated washing machine cycle over a 24 hour period whilst monitoring current and voltage data for each of the modules under test..  Custom PC software, written in Visual Basic provided the user interface, control of the test parameters, monitoring and logging of data.  At the end of the test a pass / fail status was displayed to give a simple production test environment to an operator
