Test Evolution Ltd’s primary activity is the design, manufacture and installation of custom test equipment, monitoring and design solutions for a multitude of differing industries.  Over the years this has ranged from pcb level designs through to large multi-cabinet systems.  Our equipment has been installed and used across Europe, North America and the Far East.

In recent years we have seen more emphasis on the development of production test systems, such as burn in / life test and end of line test equipment, primarily for the optoelectronics industry.  Some of these systems consist of ‘off the shelf’ instrumentation, typically integrated into a cabinet and driven by software written for the application.  Other systems have been developed from the bottom up and consist almost entirely of electronics, software and mechanics designed specifically for their purpose.  The design approach taken has depends on several factors such as size, performance, cost, delivery timescale and also customer preference.  The approach used is discussed in detail with the customer prior to quotation and is accompanied with a preliminary specification if necessary.  Often there is a perception that using ‘off the shelf’ instrumentation is the safer route, possibly from a timescale, cost or reliability route.  We have found that we can often develop ‘custom’ systems which cost less, take less space and perform better than an instrumentation equivalent, because the equipment is specifically designed for its purpose.  As for reliability we still have systems in use which were installed over 10 years ago and have been in constant use ever since.

Developed for a manufacturer of gas burners for industrial and commercial boilers this system provided an automated test station to allow the efficiency and performance of the burners to be monitored.  The system acted as both an engineering tool for development of new designs and also as a production tool to verify satisfactory performance of various products.

The system monitored and controlled input gasses, exhaust gasses, temperatures and pressures to allow the burners to be tested under many conditions.  Data was supplied to the user in both graphical and spreadsheet format.  National Instruments distributed I/O modules were used in this application in conjunction with some of the customers existing equipment which was integrated into the system.  Labview was used to provide PC based instrument control and acquisition of data.  The project included the system design and manufacture, development of PC software and installation / commissioning on site including installation of cabling around the test area.
